Meet Kate of Crafting Friends Designs
I enjoy stopping by Crafting Friends Designs blog. Kate, the owner, is extremely talented and friendly. She is also the Founder of the Battle of the Stitches crochet competition. If you haven’t checked out Battle of the Stitches you definitely need to make it a priority. I absolutely love how she is always willing to share other designer’s projects.
Tell me a little something about your personal life ~ kids, family, pets, etc.
My name is Kate, I’m the gal behind Crafting Friends Designs and Founder of the Battle of the Stitches crochet competition. I have a handsome husband and 4 beautiful girls ages 19, 6, 5 and 2. We now have 4 cats (hopefully to keep the mice away), and 1 sweet ole dog. We live in in a tiny little home in a small town in Northern Utah with lots of land around us for the girls to play on, room for me to garden and still room for hubby to enjoy his hobbies.
How long have you been crocheting?
I’ve been crocheting for almost 30 years. My mom taught me when I was 10 and I have never stopped. Crochet is my yoga, my relaxation, my stress relief, and my creative outlet.
How long have you been blogging? Why did you start blogging?
I started my blog in 2011 as a way to keep a record of the projects that I’ve crocheted. I have made over 100 afghans in my life and had photos of most of them. My toddlers loved to look through the photo book that I kept of my work and many of the photos ended up bent, so I decided it was time to start a blog more for myself to see what I’ve accomplished. When I started designing shortly after that, it became a way for me to share what I’ve created. Admittedly, I felt really silly at first talking to myself on the computer (that’s how I felt) but it’s been a good release for me and I’ve grown so much from gaining the courage to do so.
What is your favorite thing about crocheting and/or blogging?
My favorite thing about crocheting is that I’ve met so many people online who have the same interest as me, can relate to my joy of yarn and I consider quite a few of them my friends. Crocheting is not the ugly yarn clothes that I used to see when I was younger. Crochet has come a long way and there are so many beautiful projects to look at and the service that is offered throughout the crochet community is awesome.
What are your favorite items to make?
I absolutely love designing girls dresses 1 – because my girls can wear them and 2 – because my girls are my biggest cheerleaders. Afghans are my other favorite thing to design. I love everything about blankets. I feel accomplished after making one, I almost always make them with specific people in mind and the joy that it brings to give them as gifts and to see them used is priceless.
What are your favorite yarns (brands or types to work with?
The yarn I choose really depends on what project I’m working on. A lot of times, I stick with yarn that I can get locally just in case I run out. I typically use Red Heart Super Saver, Soft or With Love for my afghans, Caron Simply Soft or I Love This Cotton for my clothing and I have a bunch of other yarns that I’ve purchased to play with and get a feel for where I would fit them in. I’m not a yarn snob lol. I like to try a variety of things.
Where do you get your inspiration from?
Everywhere. There are times when a color of yarn cries out to me at a store and I can picture a design there. My girls will try and tell me things I should make (which I love, but I’m not sure I could pull off all their ideas). Crochet Stitch books are something that I look through over and over. I love just looking and sometimes, a stitch jumps out at me and I HAVE to use it.
What is your favorite item on your blog at the moment?
My favorite blog post right now is the With All My Heart Service Project with Free Crochet Patterns found here:
I absolutely love being able to give to others in a time of need and this project was put before me for a reason. Service doesn’t have to be a huge project that takes a lot of hours. Sometimes, the small, simple things will mean even more!
What would be the one piece of advice you would give to a person setting up their own blog?
Think long term. Where do you want to be a year or more from now? Set things up the way you envision you will be in the future. If you have faith in yourself and believe you’ll succeed in your adventure, then you’ll set yourself up for success.
How do fellow bloggers get their patterns featured on your sites?
I LOVE sharing things from other Crochet designers and bloggers who I respect and trust. I do have a page specifically for linking to others that I know well (I need to add more! I’ve fallen behind on that.) http://www.craftingfriendsdesigns.com/links-to-friends.html#.VNvmtXI3P4g
Most of the time, I just share from those that I’m familiar with, but I also enjoy getting to know new people.
