Meet Deborah of Designs from Grammy’s Heart
I love getting to visit Designs from Grammy’s Heart and seeing her site and what she’s been up to lately. Deborah, the owner, is very talented, full of information, compassionate, and always a delight to talk too. She is helpful, always willing to share her knowledge with others, share other crochet designer’s projects, and much more.
Tell me a little something about your personal life ~ kids, family, pets, etc.
Hi! I am Deborah Ziegler; owner and artisan of this little adventure that I call Designs from Grammy’s Heart. I’m so glad you came to visit! I hope you’ll stick around for awhile and enjoy yourself.
I have the deepest love for my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Because of His love, the love I have for my family is great. I’m proud to say that I am a child of the Most High God. I am a daughter and a sister. I am the wife of an incredible man of God. I am mom to three handsome men, each with equally beautiful wives! I am step-mom (don’t really like that word) to five beautiful daughters. And, I am blessed to have some adorable ‘little people’ call me Grammy. My life thus far has been quite full & because of Jesus Christ, the best is yet to be!
How long have you been crocheting?
I have always loved fiber arts. I learned to crochet as a young girl…my grandmother and mother taught me the basics (and granny squares) when I was about 10 years old. It wasn’t fun to me then as it felt like a chore. I put it away for awhile…until I was in high school. I was a 70’s high school girl which meant Home EC was involved. I LOVED IT! I learned to sew, I learned to create. And, I learned that I was good at it! I began combining crochet with sewing and never stopped from then on.
How long have you been blogging? Why did you start blogging?
Ha! This month of August is actually Grammy’s anniversary month. I had a website for years. It was basically a place for me to share projects and photos with my family. But when it comes to this blogging thing, I’m pretty new with that! I started this blog/business with the encouragement of family. Thanks family! (I think) So, Designs from Grammy’s Heart has been in the works over the past 2 years with more emphasis this past year. The site as well as I is a work in progress. As I said in the beginning…the best is yet to be!
What is your favorite thing about crocheting and/or blogging?
I actually find both relaxing. I usually crochet in the evening with my hubby next to me on the couch. Blogging is something I like to maintain in the morning. I answer emails and comments then. That is when I like to do my research as well. With a nice hot cup of coffee or tea beside me, I will begin digging into the details of an article, a technique or a tip I am going to write about. I’m kind of a history nerd too. I love sharing the history of something too. I try to share something each week.
What are your favorite items to make?
Things for the kids! Anything for my gran’sillies; and they do challenge me. I will make things for them that I will not publish as I do not own licensing to any trademark/licensed characters.
For the public I still enjoy things for the kids. Designs of stuffed animals are a favorite. I like to create them with what I call pocket mouths so the kids can ‘hide’ things in them. Ollie the Octopus is one such design:
Another favorite is baskets! I have a love of baskets and they can be great stash-busters! Recently I have been using a paracord type yarn to create some baskets. This beautiful basket can be found here:
Lately, I have been doing women’s accessory pieces. Cowls and shawls have caught my eye. =) I released my first shawl, Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend as part of my Birth-a-versary Bash on August 7th
What are your favorite yarns (brands or types to work with?
My favorites are natural fibers. I love working with cotton and cotton blends. I recently found some raffia…I HAVE to try it! Right now my stash consists of a lot of acrylic that I inherited from a friend. I’ve been testing; OKAY…I have been playing with some of the yummy yarns that I got at Marly Bird’s Designers Dinner earlier this spring.
Where do you get your inspiration from?
Probably a cliché but truly everywhere! I even wrote an article about inspiration; it’s everywhere! Check it out HERE!
What is your favorite item on your blog at the moment?
WOW! That’s a toughie! I have so many for different reasons. I have a stitch technique that I introduced. I love it for doing stuffed animals. I call it a split half double crochet.
I have a baby cocoon that I designed when my friend and fellow designer announced that she was going to be a Grammy for the first time. Bundle of Joy
I could go on, but you get the picture! I love them all, just like my kids. LOL
What would be the one piece of advice you would give to a person setting up their own blog?
Take your time. Personally I think I tried to do too much all at once. I jumped from one thing to another and was never satisfied. I got so frustrated I really wanted to quit! Instead of that, I stopped. I stopped trying to do everything that everyone else was doing. I started doing what was fun for me! When it got to be fun for me, I noticed more and more folks were having fun with me on my blog.
Find yourself and do what you like. When you can do that, it fits. It’s fun and people will join in.
Surround yourself with encouragement. I love my desk! I have my bible and my journal right beside me. I have things around me that my gran’sillies have made. I have my hooks and my yarn. I have my sketchbook along with my markers & colored pencils.
All that said, in the end those things are just things. People; surround yourself with people that encourage. My husband is my greatest fan as well as my greatest critic. I trust him. I also have a group of ladies whom (though I have only met a few of them in person) I call my Ladies of Inspiration. These beautiful women keep it real. They have inspired me in ways they may never know. I am grateful for their work ethic, they are caring and sharing! I could gush on about them for hours, but I won’t.
How do fellow bloggers get their patterns featured on your sites?
Designs from Grammy’s Heart does weekly round ups. I include other artisans from across the internet in these round ups. In the past (and I hope to get back to it very soon) I had a Featured Artisan of the Week.
I use my Facebook page for Designs from Grammy’s Heart as well as Twitter and G+ as other outlets to promote fellow artisans.
