Meet Marie of Underground Crafter
I love stopping by Underground Crafter and looking at all of her creations. Marie, the owner, is extremely talented, full of knowledge, kind, a joy to talk to, and friendly. I love how creative she is, how she is always willing to share her knowledge with others, share other crochet designer’s projects, and much more.
Tell me a little something about your personal life ~ kids, family, pets, etc.
I’m a native New Yorker and I still live in New York City! I live with my boyfriend and two rescued cats.
How long have you been crocheting?
I learned to crochet from my maternal grandmother in 1984. I’ve been crocheting on and off since then, but I really started getting passionate about crochet in the early 2000s once I learned how to read patterns.
How long have you been blogging? Why did you start blogging?
I started blogging in 2011. I started because I wanted to share my love of crochet and other crafts. From the start, I really loved interacting with other bloggers and readers.
What is your favorite thing about crocheting and/or blogging?
I love that you can meet people who have different backgrounds and points of view but come together because of your shared love of crochet.
What are your favorite items to make?
I do a fair amount of crocheting on the subway or bus, and so do the students I teach, so I love to make portable projects like women’s accessories and granny squares.
What are your favorite yarns (brands or types to work with?
Hmmm, I think wool is my favorite type of yarn to work with. Generally speaking, it has great stitch definition and is very elastic, so it keeps its shape after wash and wear. There are so many great textures depending on the breed of sheep, and now there are great washable wool yarns, too.
Where do you get your inspiration from?
It’s not always the same source! I get a lot of fashion inspiration from riding the subways of New York City! I also love to play around with stitch dictionaries and swatch, and sometimes the yarn and the stitch will just come together in a way that makes me want to start a new project.
What is your favorite item on your blog at the moment?
What would be the one piece of advice you would give to a person setting up their own blog?
Web hosting is more important than I knew when I started, and I had several years with a bad host. (As a result, all of my comments from the first 3-1/2 years of my blog were lost!) I would say that you should ask bloggers you trust for recommendations of a host before getting started rather than just going for the cheapest service or the one that shows up in an ad.
How do fellow bloggers get their patterns featured on your sites?
I feature patterns a few different ways. I always do a roundup for the Crochet Specialty of the Month, so if you have a pattern that uses one of those techniques, I can include it there. Also, I do a lot of interviews with crochet designers and bloggers, and I usually feature 7-10 of their patterns in those interviews.
