Meet Sara of Momwithahook
I enjoy stopping by Momwithahook blog. Sara, the owner, is extremely talented and friendly. She is also the founder of Crochet Business. If you haven’t checked out Crochet Business you definitely need to make it a priority. I absolutely love how she is always willing to share her knowledge with others and share other crochet designer’s projects.
Tell me a little something about your personal life ~ kids, family, pets, etc.
I married a man who is now my best friend. I seriously feel like he has always been a part of me. We have 2 boys both on their way to “flying” out on their own.
I enjoy quiet, looking out the window at the sunshine while working, being greeted by blue jays, gray squirrels, and neighborhood cats.
Crochet is definitely a part of my life but not as much as it was when my boys were little. They were the inspiration behind much of what was made.
I am my husband’s number one fan – did I mention he’s a drummer and guitarist? Melts my heart each time I hear him play.
How long have you been crocheting?
I’ve been crocheting since 1999 when I first picked up the hook.
How long have you been blogging? Why did you start blogging?
I started blogging in 2007 as part of a swap I participated in via swap-bot.com. The theme was sharing our craft so I started a blog on blogspot under the username mom-with-a-hook.
What is your favorite thing about crocheting and/or blogging?
My favorite thing about crocheting is that I’ve met so many people online who have the same interest as me, can relate to my joy of yarn and I consider quite a few of them my friends. Crocheting is not the ugly yarn clothes that I used to see when I was younger. Crochet has come a long way and there are so many beautiful projects to look at and the service that is offered throughout the crochet community is awesome.
What are your favorite items to make?
I pretty much enjoy everything I crochet but if it is a new pattern or stitch I get pretty excited. If I am making something for someone my excitement comes from seeing how much they enjoy it.
What are your favorite yarns (brands or types to work with?
Of everything I tried so far, Lion Brand Vanna’s choice or Wool Ease are my favorite for hats and scarves.
For afghans, crochet portraits and amigurumi I like Red Heart super saver. They have so many colors to choose from.
Every now again I buy hand dyed merino wool which is always a pleasure to work with.
Where do you get your inspiration from?
Inspiration comes from my family, others, feelings, other crochet designers, boredom (believe it or not) and necessity. For example, I needed something light-weight that could hold my driving license and cash so I just crocheted a little belt with a stash pocket.
What is your favorite item on your blog at the moment?
Recently I’ve been doing the Jeff Goins My 500 Words challenge. As someone who needs to process things through writing it helps me write on topics I would never choose on my own. Challenging and vulnerable but I believe helpful not only for me but for my readers as they see a little more of ‘me’ outside of crochet.
My best crochet related piece is the Waldorf crochet doll http://crochetbusiness.com/free-crochet-pattern-waldorf-gnome/. It was created before I learned how to knit. I made the first ones for my youngest son.
What would be the one piece of advice you would give to a person setting up their own blog?
Don’t stress. If you feel anxious about doing it yourself hire someone (Fiverr.com is a good place to start) or ask a friend to help you out.
How do fellow bloggers get their patterns featured on your sites?
Just ask. My blog is transitioning from a “how to start a crochet business” focus to more of a lifestyle blog with crochet being one of the main crafts (topics).
Contact me on the blog or through social media. If you have a pattern that is for sale, let me know, I’ll buy it and review it if time permits.
