Meet Sedruola of Yarn Obsession
I love stopping by Yarn Obsession and seeing what she’s been up to lately. Sedruola, the owner, is remarkably talented, very knowledgeable, kind, honest, and a joy to talk too. She is willing to share her knowledge with others, shares other crochet designer’s projects, she’s creative, and much more.
Tell me a little something about your personal life ~ kids, family, pets, etc.
I’m married to an amazing man and we have two great kids. We’ve been married for almost 13 years. Sometimes I just can’t believe it’s been that long! My son is 9 and my daughter is 4, it makes for very interesting dynamics. We’re blessed because we wanted two kids, we got two kids and our family is complete. We don’t have any pets yet. My son wants a dog, but where we live now we’re not allowed to have a dog, so we keep telling him when we move. We’re hoping that will be soon.
How long have you been crocheting?
I started crocheting after meeting my husband’s grandmother so it’s been about 14 years now. She didn’t teach me, but she inspired my learning to crochet.
How long have you been blogging? Why did you start blogging?
I’ve been blogging for about as long as blogs have been around. However, it wasn’t until about 5-6 years ago that I started to use my blog mostly for business and strategically. I started blogging to keep friends and family updated on our quest to get pregnant. It was a two and a half year journey to finally get pregnant with my son. We lived in California and our families were in the Midwest, East and South. So I started blogging. After having my son, I started blogging as a way to talk about my crochet journey because I began to look at it as an opportunity to stay home with my baby. It’s been a long evolution, but it needed to be exactly what it was and is today.
What is your favorite thing about crocheting and/or blogging?
My favorite thing about crocheting is how much it relaxes me. Once I pick up a project I feel tension just leave my body and I just get lost in the stitches. My son has started falling asleep in our bed because he likes to lie next to me and watch me crochet because it relaxes him enough to fall asleep faster. I’m not sure if that’s good or bad, but it’s nice when he says “mommy, will you crochet next to me?”
What are your favorite items to make?
I love to make clothing! Thing is, I’m not as patient as I wish I were so sometimes I end up with more WIP’s than I would like, but I do love to make clothing!
What are your favorite yarns (brands or types to work with?
I love to work with bamboo blends, silk blends, mercerized cotton blends and rayon. Anything that slips through my fingers like water, I love!
Where do you get your inspiration from?
Fashion and necessity are my inspiration. A few times I’ve made pieces that came just from me wanting a certain style item and making it. Other times, it’s because I’ve seen something in a fashion magazine, on Pinterest or on the street and thought it would look amazing with crochet texture.
What is your favorite item on your blog at the moment?
My favorite pattern on my blog at the moment is the Caribbean Sail Crochet Top! I love it because it is easily adjusted for any body type and looks amazing on anyone! I also love it because it’s a lot easier that most people think. Beautiful crochet doesn’t have to be hard, just beautiful!
What would be the one piece of advice you would give to a person setting up their own blog?
Be consistent. If what you want to do is use the blog as your main source for your business then create a schedule and be consistent about when you post. Especially when just getting started it’s important to establish your blog and a pattern that your audience can follow. When you become more established you’ll be able to adjust it as needed, but be vigilantly consistent in the beginning. Even if that means posting only once a month, stick to your schedule and increase as you see fit.
How do fellow bloggers get their patterns featured on your sites?
I’m so excited to offer the opportunity for new and established designers to submit patterns, tips, tricks and tutorials for Yarn by Yarn Obsession! All you have to do is go to THIS PAGE and submit the form. Once I or my assistant Erin reviews the submission, we’ll get back to you on what we need. I make the process as easy as possible so it doesn’t get complicated for me or for my guest. I also do guest posts about business, marketing, social media etc. (non-pattern) on THIS PAGE the goal is to help as many people as I possibly can use their crochet talent to better theirs and other’s lives.
