Meet Maria of Pattern Paradise
I enjoy stopping by Pattern Paradise and seeing what she’s been up to. Maria, the owner, is very talented, full of knowledge, kind, friendly, and a delight to talk to. She is always willing to share her knowledge with others, share other crochet designer’s projects, and much more.
Tell me a little something about your personal life ~ kids, family, pets, etc.
I am married for almost 30 years to a wonderful man who supports my little yarn addiction. I have 3 great kids (boy, boy, girl) who help me out with picking up supplies, dropping things off at the post office and the occasional modeling request.
How long have you been crocheting?
Since I was 9 or 10
How long have you been blogging? Why did you start blogging?
September will be my 2 year blogging anniversary. I started blogging because I wanted to share my interests, predominantly crochet, but some recipes and travel too!
What is your favorite thing about crocheting and/or blogging?
Crocheting allows me a creative outlet and blogging provides me somewhere to share it. I love reading the comments on my blog and emails from followers. My favorite is when someone takes one of my patterns and tweaks a little for their own needs/preferences. I just love knowing that my patterns are versatile enough to provide the basis for so many different looks.
What are your favorite items to make?
I get bored easily and I like to try new challenges, so I enjoy making all types of projects, but I have a soft spot for baby and toddler things 🙂
What are your favorite yarns (brands or types to work with?
I love working with cottons and really soft wools. Cascade, Malabrigo, Knit Picks, Berroco and more! Did I mention I have a yarn addiction?
Where do you get your inspiration from?
Inspiration is all around me. I get it in so many different ways it is difficult to explain. Sometimes it is a color, or shape that triggers the idea. Sometimes I actually get a snap vision of a finished item and then have to figure out how to construct it. I love looking at catalogues and magazines to find a design element I like (a collar, cuff, or some other detail) and then translate that into one of my designs.
What is your favorite item on your blog at the moment?
I’m loving my X Stitch Challenge. Last year I took on the Chameleon Challenge – I created a basic hat pattern and each month I made some simple modifications to it to illustrate how many different looks one can achieve with a basic pattern. This year I’m doing the same thing but instead of a hat, I chose 1 stitch to work with – The X Stitch!
What would be the one piece of advice you would give to a person setting up their own blog?
Oh that’s easy…do your homework. Study the blogs you like, figure out why you like them, then use that inspiration to start your own, however, always be unique and yourself. No one wants a copycat!
How do fellow bloggers get their patterns featured on your sites?
Each Monday I feature my favorite designs in my Crochet Finds feature. Each Tuesday, three of my blogger friends and I host a fiber arts link party on our blogs, and bloggers are welcome to link to The Linky Ladies Link Party. I also enjoy collaborating with others on CALs, blog hops or other fun project.
