Coffee Cup Cozy

This coffee cup cozy is nice and cozy because the stitches are worked closely together it will keep your hands from getting hot while holding the cup. This cup cozy will fit a standard coffee cup or mug that is about 3” in diameter.
Skill Level: Easy
Yarn: Lily Sugar ‘n Cream (100% Cotton 4 ply, 56.7 g, 2 oz)
Crochet Hook: H/8 (5.00mm) (for cozy) and G/6 (4.25mm) (for button)
Button 3/8” (optional)
Gauge: Not important
Finished size: Fits a coffee cup or mug that is about 3” in diameter
BLO = Back Loop Only
Ch/Chs = Chain/Chains
Hdc = Half Double Crochet
Hk = Hook
Rep = Repeat
Rnd = Round
Sc = Single Crochet
Sk = Skip
Sl St = Slip Stitch
St/Sts = Stitch/Stitches
Ch 2 at beginning of rnd counts as hdc throughout.
Rnd 1: Ch 2 work 7 hdc in 2nd ch from hook, join with sl st in first chain (8 sts); CH 2
Rnd 2: 1 Hdc in same st as ch 2, 2 hdc in each st around, join with sl st in ch 2 (16 sts); CH 2
Rnd 3: 2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in next st, rep from * around, join with sl st (24 sts); CH 2
Rnd 4: Hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st, hdc in next 2 sts, rep from * around join with sl st, (32 sts); CH 2
Rnd 5: Working in BLO, Hdc in each st around, join with sl st, (32 sts); CH 2
Rnd 6 – 7: Hdc in each st around, join with sl st, (32 sts); CH 2
Working in rows:
Row 1: Hdc in each of first 30 sts, CH 2 turn (Leave remaining 2 stitches unworked for handle.)
Row 2 – 4: Hdc in each st (30 sts,); CH 2, turn
Row 5: Ch 1 sc in each st across. CH 12 sl st back into same space (for button loop). Turn work and work sc down opening and around to top. Work additional 2 sc in same space where first sc was worked, join with sl st and fasten off.
Weave in ends.
Make a button as below or sew on a purchased 3/8” button if desired.
Rnd 1: with G hook, Ch 2 work 7 sc in 2nd ch from hook, join with sl st to skipped ch (8 sts); CH 1
Rnd 2: SC in each st around, join (8 sts); CH 1
Rnd 3: Working over round 2 work sc into each st of round one. Fasten off leaving tail to sew button on.
Sew button on top corner of cozy opposite corner from the loop. Work in ends.
