Level of Difficulty – Beginner/Intermediate
Yarn – Red Heart Cream de la Cream Worsted Weight 100 % cotton, 2.5 oz, 70.9 g, 125 yds I used a small amount of #0205 Golden Yellow (color A), #0905 Really Red (color B), #0649 Forest (color C), and #0001 White (color D)
Hook and Notions – Size Hook: H (5 mm), scissors and blunt needle
Measurement – 10-inche square
Gauge – 4 stitches + 4 rows = 2- inches
Abbreviations
Ch/chs = chain/chains
Dc = double crochet
Hdc = half double crochet
Sc = single crochet
Sc2tog = single crochet 2 together
Sp/sps = space/spaces
St/sts = stitch/stitches
Special Stitches
1. Double Crochet Cluster Stitch also Double Crochet 3 Together Stitch (DC3Tog)
Yarn Over hook insert hook into the indicated stitch. Yarn Over and draw up a loop, Yarn Over and draw through the first 2 loops on the hook. Yarn Over insert our hook in same st and draw through a loop; you should have 4 loops on your hook. Yarn Over draw through the first 2 loops only and you should have 3 loops on your hook. Yarn Over and insert hook same stitch and draw through that will give you 5 loops on your hook. Yarn Over and draw through the first 2 loops. That will leave you with 4 loops on your hook. Yarn Over and draw through all 4 loops on the hook. Secure the cluster with a chain stitch.
2. Reverse Single Crochet aka Crab Stitch
This is worked from left to right (or opposite direction) With right side of project facing you Chain 1, insert hook into next stitch to right, yarn over and pull through, (2 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through both loops. Continue working * * until you have reached the end of project. Slip stitch into first chain 1 and fasten off, weave in ends.
Notes
Poinsettia and square are worked then sewed together.
Chain 1 at beginning of rows or rounds does not count as a stitch
Center of Poinsettia
With Color A (Yellow) Chain 4 slip stitch together to form ring
Work 4 dc cl stitches inside ring; join with a slip stitch in top of 1st cl stitch
Fasten off color A
Small Petals: (make 4 in chain 1 spaces of dc cl)
Attach color B (Red) into a chain 1 space for 1st petal
Row 1: Chain 1, work 4 sc in same chain 1 space. Turn (4 sc)
Row 2: Chain 1, hdc in 1st sc and in each sc across. Turn (4 hdc)
Row 3: Repeat Row 2
Row 4: Sc2tog twice. Turn (2 sc)
Row 5: Sc2tog, (DO NOT FASTEN OFF) working in sides of rows on left of petal just made slip stitch to base, slip stitch into next chain 1 space. First petal complete
Repeat Rows 1–5; 3 times
At base of last petal turn work to back making loops for next row of petals
Chain 3, slip stitch into opposite side of petal, * chain 3, slip stitch into 1st stitch of the next petal, chain 3, slip stitch into the last stitch of the petal, * repeat from * to * around. (8 ch 3 spaces)
Large Petals (make 8 in ch 3 spaces just made)
Turn work working behind small petals slip stitch into 1st chain 3 space
Row 1: Chain 1, work 6 sc in the same space. Turn (6 sc)
Row 2: Chain 1, sc in first stitch and in each stitch across. Turn (6 sc)
Rows 3–5: Repeat Row 2
Row 6: Sc2tog, sc in the next 2 sc, sc2tog. Turn (4 sc)
Row 7: Chain 1, sc in each stitch across. Turn (4 sc)
Row 8: Chain 1, sc2tog twice (2 sc)
Row 9: Sc2tog. (DO NOT FASTEN OFF) working in sides of rows on left of petal just made slip stitch to the base, slip stitch into the next chain 3 space. First petal complete
Repeat Rows 1–9; 7 times Total of 8 large petals
At base of last petal fasten off red
On side of 1st large petal attach color C (green) on back to make loops for row of leaves
Chain 3, slip stitch into the opposite side of the next petal, repeat 3 times; join with a slip stitch into the 1st chain. (4 ch 3 spaces)
Turn working behind 2 rows of red petals
Row 1: Slip stitch into the 1st chain 3 loop, work 8 sc into the loop. Turn (8 sc)
Row 2: Chain 1, sc in the 1st sc and in each stitch across. Turn (8 sc)
Rows 3–8: Repeat Row 2
Row 9: Sc2tog, sc in the next 4, sc2tog. Turn (6 sc)
Row 10: Chain 1, sc in 1st stitch and in each stitch across. Turn (6 sc)
Row 11: Chain 1, sc2tog, sc in the next 2 stitches, sc2tog. Turn (4 sc)
Row 12: Chain 1, sc in the 1st stitch and in each stitch across. Turn (4 sc)
Row 13: Chain 1, sc2tog 2 times. (2 sc)
Row 14: sc2tog (DO NOT FASTEN OFF) working in sides of rows on left of leaf just made slip stitch to the base, slip stitch into the next chain 3 space. First leaf complete
Repeat Rows 1–14; 3 times Total of 4 large leaves
At base of last leaf fasten off green work in all ends lay aside
12-inch square with color D (White)
Chain 4; join with a slip stitch to form a ring.
Round 1: Chain 1 (see notes) work 8 sc in the ring; join with a slip stitch in top of 1st sc. (8 sc)
Round 2: Chain 1, work 2 hdc in same stitch as join and in each stitch around; join with a slip stitch in top of 1st hdc (16 hdc)
Round 3: Chain 1, work 2 hdc in same stitch as join, * hdc in next stitch, work 2 hdc in next stitch, * repeat from * to * around; join with a slip stitch in top of 1st hdc. (24hdc)
Round 4: Chain 1, hdc in same stitch as join and in next 4 stitches, work (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) corner made, * hdc in next 5 stitches, work corner in next stitch, * repeat 2 more times; joining with slip stitch in top of 1st hdc. (5 hdc on each side and 4 corners)
Round 5: Chain 1, dc in same stitch as join and in the next 6 stitches, work corner in chain 2 space, dc in the next 9 stitches, work corner in chain 2 space, dc in next 9 stitches, work corner in chain 2 space, dc in next 9 stitches, work corner in chain 2 space, ending with dc in last 2 stitches; join with a slip stitch in top of 1st dc. (13 dc on each side and 4 corners)
Rounds 6–10: Repeat Round 5 increasing dc on each side evenly between corners
Round 11: Work reverse single crochet in each stitch around, placing 2 in each corner.
Fasten off and weave ends
Finishing
Place poinsettia centered on top of square with the leaves pointing to each corner. Pin in place and sew the flower to the square around rnd 4, leaving the ends of petals and leaves loose.
