Level of Difficulty – Beginner/Intermediate
Yarn – Bernat Handicrafter #4, 100% Cotton, White (Color A) approximately 25 to 50 yds, and Bernat Handicrafter Holiday Red #4 98% cotton with Silver Metallic Thread (Color B) approximately 75 to 100 yds
Hook and Notions – Size Hook: I (5.5mm), scissors, yarn needle
Measurement – Laying flat width 5 ½ inches, height bottom of band to top of pompom 10 inches

Abbreviations
Ch/chs = chain/chains
Dc = double crochet
Dec = decrease
Hdc = half double crochet
Sc = single crochet
Sp = space
Special Stitches
Reverse Single Crochet aka Crab Stitch – This stitch is worked from left to right (or opposite direction) than you normally crochet.
With right side of project facing you Chain 1, * insert hook into next stitch to right, yarn over and pull through, (2 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through both loops *. Continue working * to * until you have reached the end of project. Slip stitch into first chain 1 and fasten off, weave in ends.
Notes – Start with band and work up. Ch 2 at beginning of rows counts as 1st hdc throughout unless otherwise stated.
Coaster Instructions
Chain 17
Row 1: Sc in 2nd chain from hook and across. Turn (16 sc)
Row 2: Chain 2 (counts as 1st hdc), hdc in each st across. Turn (16 hdc)
Row 3: Repeat Row 2
Fasten off White (Color A) attach Red (Color B)
Row 4 – 9: Repeat Row 2 (16 hdc)
Row 10: Chain 2, hdc dec over first 2 stitches, hdc next 12 stitches, hdc dec over last 2 stitches. Turn (14 hdc)
Row 11: Chain 2 hdc in each stitch across. Turn (14 hdc)
Row 12: Chain 2, hdc dec over first 2 stitches, hdc next 12 stitches, 2 hdc last stitch. Turn (14 hdc)
Row 13: Chain 2, hdc in same stitch, hdc next 11 stitches, hdc dec over last 2 stitches. Turn (13 hdc)
Row 14: Chain 2, (hdc dec) three times, hdc next 5 stitches, work 2 hdc next stitch, 3 hdc last stitch. Turn (13 hdc)
Row 15: Chain 9, hdc in 2nd chain from hook and next 7 chains, hdc next 9 stitches, sc next stitch, slip stitch last stitch. Turn (19 sts)
Row 16: Slip Stitch in first 6 stitches, sc next stitch, hdc next 2 stitches, dc in next 7 stitches, hdc next stitch, slip stitch in last stitch. (18 sts)
DO NOT TURN
Row 17: Work crab stitch around the red part of the hat, at row 3 crab stitch in front loop across the front of the hat to make a ridge, continue on other side of hat. Turn hat as needed to work crab stitch in remaining stitches. Join to 1st chain 1
Fasten off and weave in ends
PomPom
If you have a pompom maker, make a 2 inch pompom and attach to tip of hat, secure and weave in ends.
If you do not have a pompom maker take a 2inch by 6 inch piece of cardboard and wind yarn around the 2 inches 25 times, cut a piece of yarn and pull it through the loops, tie to secure, cut the loops on other edge of cardboard, secure pompom to top of hat and weave in ends.
