September Charity Event
According to the National Cancer Institute at the National Institutes of Health, September is the month for Childhood Cancer Awareness, Leukemia and Lymphoma Awareness, Ovarian Cancer Awareness, and Prostate Cancer Awareness.
American Crochet is the sponsor for the Elk Studio Crocheters, From the Heart event for September. The organization to receive the beanies and hats is the MD Anderson Children’s Cancer Center. The mission of the MD Anderson Children’s Cancer Hospital (www.mdanderson.org) is to cure cancer in children and young adults within a caring, life-affirming environment. We offer children and young adults hope and an opportunity to lead full and productive lives. We will lead the efforts worldwide to cure cancers through the excellence and compassion of our people, research-driven innovative therapies, education programs and active collaboration with patients, families and communities. We know cancer—and we know kids.
Type of projects to be made: Hats (all gender) At this time there are only a few patients under 10 yrs of age. The majority of patients are adolescents and young adults between 11 to 17 years of age. These are your average kids they like bright bold colors and designs.
Type of material needed: Soft yarn – the youtube video really details it well. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7VfflYItjOE&feature=youtu.be
Any restrictions: No wool of any type (goat, sheep, alpaca, lama, etc), blend or otherwise. Wash hands frequently, no smoking of any kind, no pet hair, no perfumes or scented yarns. Do not wash items unless you do it with scent-free/gentle/baby detergent. They didn’t say from a pet-free environment, so I have started keeping my yarn in a tied plastic bag, so no pet hair gets on it while I’m hooking. Place individual items in a ziplock-type baggie.
All project will need to be submitted no later than September 20, 2014. Please attach a small note inside your ziplock bag to your recipient. I’m sure some kind words of encouragement will be appreciated.
