Crochet has always been about so much more than yarn and stitches. It’s about connection, comfort, and the joy of giving something handmade from the heart — and there’s no gift quite as tender as tiny stitches made for the tiniest of babies.

This September, I’m honored to once again join the Preemie Crochet Challenge, a beautiful community event hosted by Helen of Sunflower Cottage Crochet. Now in its 7th year, it runs the whole month — September 1st through 30th — as makers from around the world come together to crochet soft, cozy items for premature babies and the families who love them.

What Is the Preemie Crochet Challenge?

The Preemie Crochet Challenge is an annual, month-long event with one sweet purpose: spreading handmade love to the tiniest babies in the NICU. Here’s how it works:

  • All September long (Sept 1–30), a new free preemie pattern is featured each day — 30 designs in all, from hats and blankets to booties, loveys, and bonding squares.
  • You download that day’s free pattern, crochet at least one item, and donate it to a local NICU, hospital, charity, or family in need.
  • Because these makes are for the most delicate little ones, always reach for soft, washable yarns — and check your chosen NICU or charity’s guidelines first (they often have specific requirements for yarn, size, and washing).

You’ll find all the free patterns — and everything you need to join in — right here on Helen’s challenge page:

Preemie Patterns from American Crochet

Over the past year I’ve designed a few free patterns especially for the littlest ones — perfect makes for this challenge, and ready for you to stitch and donate:

  • Little Luminary Hat — a soft, snug preemie hat worked in a gentle half-double-crochet slip stitch. Quick to make and always needed in the NICU.
  • Little Luminary Bonding Square — a matching bonding square for the hat above.
  • Loops of Love Bonding Square — a heartfelt little square made to comfort both baby and mom.

What’s a bonding square? They come as a pair. One stays tucked close to mama so it carries her scent, and the matching square rests with the baby. When the two are swapped, that little one is wrapped in the comfort of home, even during time apart. A small square, an enormous amount of love.

All of these are free to make and donate — exactly what this challenge is all about.

And keep an eye out — I have new preemie designs joining the challenge this year. Be sure to check back to see what I’m contributing!

Let’s stay connected. Sign up to receive new patterns, maker inspiration, and a little hope delivered straight to your inbox.

Crafting a Rainbow of Hope

This mission lives close to my heart. Every stitch we make for these babies is a quiet way of saying you are loved, and you are not alone. That’s the heart of everything I do — Crafting a Rainbow of Hope — and there’s no place it shines brighter than here. (You can read more of the story behind these designs in the Little Luminary and Loops of Love patterns above.)

How You Can Join the Challenge

Whether you crochet one hat or a whole basket of blankets, you make a difference. Here’s how to jump in:

  1. Visit the challenge page and grab the free patterns featured throughout September.
  2. Crochet at least one preemie item — a hat, a bonding square, a blanket, whatever your heart is drawn to.
  3. Donate your finished makes to a local NICU, hospital, or charity (soft, washable yarns, please).
  4. Share your progress — I’d love to cheer you on as you stitch along.

Final Thoughts

There’s something so moving about a whole community picking up their hooks for babies they’ll never meet. Together, we can wrap the tiniest among us in warmth, comfort, and hope — one little stitch at a time.

Thank you, Helen, for creating a space where so much love can gather. And thank you for being here and being part of it.
