Crochet has always been about so much more than yarn and stitches. It’s about warmth — the kind you can wrap around someone’s shoulders, and the kind that comes from knowing a stranger cared enough to make something by hand, just for you.

This fall, I’m so happy to be part of the Crochet for Charity Blog Hop, a wonderful community event hosted by Assia of The Crochet Village. From September 6th through October 3rd, makers from all over are picking up their hooks to create cozy, handmade warmth for people who need it — and to help keep someone warm this winter.

What Is the Crochet for Charity Blog Hop?

The Crochet for Charity Blog Hop is a month-long event with one simple, beautiful goal: crochet warm items to give away. Here’s how it works:

  • Each day (Sept 6 – Oct 3), a new free crochet pattern is featured by a different designer — with a cozy theme for each week: hats, scarves, mittens, and blankets.
  • You grab that day’s free pattern, crochet at least one item, and donate it to keep someone warm this winter — a local shelter, hospital, nursing home, warming center, or a neighbor in need.
  • Reach for soft, washable yarns, and if you’re donating to a specific place, check their guidelines first (many have preferences for yarn, size, and care).

You’ll find all the free patterns — and everything you need to join in — right here on Assia’s hop page:

My Part in the Hop

I’m honored to be one of the featured designers in this year’s hop, with my day coming up on September 26th. Follow along on Assia’s hop page to catch every free pattern all month long — including mine!

And if you love the idea of crocheting to give, I’ve gathered free and premium charity crochet patterns — preemie makes, blankets, and cozy comfort items — over on my Charity Crochet Patterns board on Pinterest. Follow along, save your favorites, and make to give. 💛

Charity Patterns from American Crochet

Whether you’re stitching for winter warmth or for the tiniest fighters, here are a few of my own patterns made for giving — ready for you to make and donate:

  • Warm Whispers Lapghan — a soft, lap-sized blanket, just right for donating to seniors, hospital patients, and anyone who could use a little warmth. (Free!)
  • Sophie’s Little Blessing Bonding Squares — soft squares for preemies in the NICU, named for my granddaughter. (Free!)
  • Loops of Love Bonding Square — a heartfelt little square made to comfort both baby and mom. (Free!)
  • Little Luminary Hat & Bonding Square — a soft, matching preemie set. (Free!)

💛 Prefer a clean, printable set to keep? My Preemie & NICU Comfort Bundle gathers five preemie patterns in one place — a $21 value for just $13. (Every free pattern above stays free to read right here.)

Crafting a Rainbow of Hope

This is the heart of everything I do. Every hat, scarf, and blanket we make and give away is a quiet way of telling someone you matter, and you are not forgotten. That’s Crafting a Rainbow of Hope — turning a simple skill into real comfort for someone who needs it — and events like this one are exactly where it shines.

How You Can Join the Hop

Whether you crochet one scarf or a whole basket of warm things, you make a difference. Here’s how to jump in:

  1. Visit the Crochet for Charity Blog Hop page and grab the free patterns featured through October 3rd.
  2. Crochet at least one warm item — a hat, scarf, pair of mittens, or a blanket, whatever your heart is drawn to.
  3. Donate your finished makes to a local shelter, hospital, nursing home, warming center, or neighbor in need (soft, washable yarns, please).
  4. Share your progress — I’d love to cheer you on as you stitch along. Use #CrochetForCharity so we can all follow the warmth!

Final Thoughts

There’s something so moving about a whole community picking up their hooks to keep strangers warm. Together, we can wrap a lot of people in comfort this winter — one cozy stitch at a time.

Thank you, Assia, for creating a space where so much good can gather. And thank you for being here and being part of it. 💛
