This Santa Hat Hotpad is a great way to get your Kitchen ready for the holidays.  Make several and place them around the counters as decorations, or to protect your table tops from hot serving dishes as you serve your favorite dishes.  This will also make a great hostess gift if you are going to visit family and friends instead of hosting the gathering.   Level of Difficulty – Beginner/Intermediate Yarn – Bernat Handicrafter #4, 100% Cotton, White (Color A) approximately 50 to 100 yds, and Bernat Handicrafter Holiday Red #4 98% cotton with Silver Metallic Thread (Color B) approximately 150 to 200 yds Hook and Notions – Size Hook: I (5.5mm), scissors, cotton batting, and sewing needle and matching sewing thread Measurement – Laying flat width 8 inches, height 9 inches Gauge – Not important Abbreviations Ch = chain Dc = double crochet Dec = decrease Hdc = half double crochet Sc = single crochet Sl st = slip stitch Sp = space Notes – Start with band and work up. INSTRUCTIONS

Make 2 Chain 25 Row 1: Sc in 2nd chain from hook and across. Turn (24 sc) Row 2:  Chain 2 (counts as 1st hdc), hdc in each stitch across. Turn (24 hdc) Row 3: Repeat Row 2 Fasten off White (Color A) attach Red (Color B) Row 4 – 12: Repeat Row 2 (24 hdc) Row 13: Chain 2, hdc dec over first 2 stitches, hdc next 20 stitches, hdc dec over last 2 stitches. Turn (22 hdc) Row 14: Chain 2 hdc in each stitch across. Turn (22 hdc) Row 15: Chain 2, hdc dec over first 2 stitches, hdc next 18 stitches, 2 hdc last stitch. Turn (22 hdc) Row 16: Chain 2, hdc in same stitch, hdc next 17 stitches, hdc dec over last 2 stitches. Turn (20 hdc) Row 17: Chain 2, (hdc dec) three times, hdc next 11 stitches, work 2 hdc next stitch, 3 hdc last stitch. Turn (20 hdc) Row 18: Chain 9, hdc in 2nd chain from hook and next 7 chains, hdc next 16 stitches, sc next stitch, slip stitch last stitch. Turn (26 sts) Row 19: Slip Stitch in first 6 stitches, sc next stitch, hdc next 8 stitches, dc in next 8 stitches, hdc next stitch, slip stitch in last stitch. (23 sts) Fasten off and weave in ends

POMPOM (Make 2) Color A – White Round 1: Chain 2, work 6 hdc in 2nd ch from hook; join top of 1st hdc  (6 hdc) Round 2: Chain (does not count as a stitch), work 2 hdc in same stitch as ch 1 and each stitch around; join top of 1st hdc, (12 hdc) Round 3: Repeat Rnd 2 (24 hdc) Fasten off and secure to outside of hat. Be sure to Leave a long tail on one pompom for sewing together.

Batting Cut 2 thickness of cotton batting the shape of the Santa Hat. With needle and matching sewing thread secure batting to the wrong side of one section of the hat.  Place other side of hat on top of the batting with right side out and pin together to hold in place while sewing.  Use the mattress stitch and sew the two together matching stitches as you sew.  I used red yarn on the red areas and white on the white to sew with. Fasten off and weave in all ends.
