Happy 2021, my friends!
January kicks off our Happy Throw CAL where we’ll use lots of color to crochet a “happy” blanket! I thought we could change it up this year and do something a little out of the ordinary: Let’s crochet a Happy Throw out of multi-colored yarn and keep a smile on our faces this year!
The best multi colored crochet blanket pattern
This is the ultimate multi-colored crochet blanket project because the Happy Throw is completely unique to you! You can use 3 colors, or 4 colors to crochet this throw pattern, or you can choose a variegated yarn that makes you happy every time you see it. If you prefer, you can use 1 color and let the textures of the stitches make you smile. There is no right or wrong way to crochet this colorful blanket–the most important thing is that you choose yarn colors that make you happy. I am excited to be starting this crochet pattern with you! It’s like a physical representation of your life in yarn–FUN!!

What’s a Happy Throw Blanket you ask?
Well, let me give you the scoop! In a way you could say the Happy Throw is like a “mood” project. But…the Happy Throw is designed to both keep a smile on our faces and fill our hearts full of love. Each day we will crochet one row of the pattern, so that at the end of the year we end up with a beautiful multi-colored throw blanket that keeps us smiling. Change colors based on how happy you are feeling that day. If you want to change colors everyday, great! If not, I understand. I will leave those details up to you.
During the course of this multi-colored blanket crochet-along I also want to invite you to write down in your journal what makes you happy. They can be things that made you happy either while you were crocheting the week’s section, or little occasions that made you smile at some point during your day. I will be doing the same and I hope you will join me in the American Crochet Facebook group in sharing those moments.
My goal is for this crochet throw pattern to keep us in our happy place as much as possible. Each time you pick up this blanket to crochet it the colors you choose should make you smile and remember you are loved. Remember, this crochet blanket and all its beautiful colors is your happy space. Easy peasy, right?

Here is the break-down to help you prepare before you begin this crochet-along. I will provide monthly updates on the progress of each throw throughout the year. At the very end we will review the whole year and add a simple edging to each blanket if you wish.

Basic Material Requirements to Crochet a Multi-colored Blanket
Hook and Notions
- I (5.5mm) hook. Follow yarn manufacturers hook recommendations on label
- Scissors
- Stitch Markers (optional)
- Blunt needle
- Tape Measure
Picking Yarn for your throw
How much yarn do I need for this blanket?
You will need roughly 2,000 yards of #4 worsted weight yarn (Includes edging). NOTE: this depends on the type of yarn and hook you use. If you decide to use a different weight of yarn you will use the recommended hook size that is on your yarn’s label.
What colors should I use to crochet this throw?
Choose colors that put a SMILE on your face! This blanket pattern is the perfect project for using up scrap yarn that you might have laying around! Since this is a “happy” blanket, choose your yarn color(s) palette and assign a “happy” range to each color (if you are using more than one shade that is). The brightest hue might get your highest “happy” score, or it could go to the color you like the best. You get to select your own yarns, colors, and “happiness” score!
Colorful Crochet Throw Blanket Palette Ideas
Here I chose Bernat Pop! in Hot Chocolate. I chose this one because it makes me think of a vanilla latte’ (which is my FAVORITE!) and hot chocolate. These colors also make me think of happy times camping as a family during the cooler months. Sitting by the campfire drinking our favorite warm beverage and relaxing while enjoying each other’s company.
Here I chose Red Heart Dreamy in Dark Taupe, Ivory, and Rose to help spark your creative side. There’s just something about these colors that makes me smile.
Another great thing about this crochet along is that you get to use up that scrap yarn in your stash! You don’t have to run to the store or wait endlessly by the door for your yarn order to arrive. How awesome is that? I mean unless you just need an excuse to buy new yarn. LOL
HAPPY THROW CHECK IN LINKS
There are two different ways to crochet your colorful Happy Throw blanket:
Option One: you crochet your throws the way I have suggested. This will give you three Happy Throws by the end of the year.
Option Two: you crochet from January – June for the first one, and July – December for the second one.
I personally think that making three throws is the better of the two. This allows you to continue working on the throw even as the warmer months approach us.
Here’s a brief summary of how the throw blanket CAL will work:
- We are going to make three gorgeous, multi-colored crochet throw blankets that will put a smile on your face.
- We will crochet one row on our blanket per day.
- Each week I will provide a stitch pattern for you to use.
- If you get a few weeks behind, you can easily catch up as the rows are quick and easy to whip up.
