Crochet has always been about more than yarn and stitches. It’s about connection, comfort, and the joy of giving something handmade from the heart. That’s why I’m honored to join the Crochet Cancer Challenge this October, a community event hosted by Christine of Sweet Potato 3 that brings crocheters together to make hats for people going through cancer treatment.

Supporting charity-focused projects has always been part of my mission at American Crochet, and it’s why I created Crafting A Rainbow of Hope. This cause is personal, too. We have friends and know people who have gone through cancer, and a handmade hat is one small, warm way to say you are not alone.

About the Crochet Cancer Challenge

The Crochet Cancer Challenge is a month-long charity event that runs every October, and it has been bringing crocheters together since 2014. Designers from across the community share free crochet hat patterns, each available to download for a limited time. Everyone who takes part is invited to make at least one hat and donate it to someone going through cancer treatment. New patterns are featured throughout the month.

Hats are a wonderful way to give comfort. They are quick to make, they are worn every day, and a handmade one tells the person wearing it that someone was thinking of them.

You’ll find every pattern, along with everything you need to join in, on Christine’s challenge page. Tap any of the graphics in this post to visit it.

Crafting A Rainbow of Hope

Crafting A Rainbow of Hope began with cancer patients and warm hats. In November of 2014 my dad was in the hospital, and I met someone from Guest Services who mentioned that the cancer patients there needed warm hats, scarves, and other comforts while undergoing treatment. That is how Crafting A Rainbow of Hope became a reality. You can read the whole story on the Crafting A Rainbow of Hope page.

Handmade items carry a special kind of warmth — not just physical warmth, but emotional comfort. Through Crafting A Rainbow of Hope, I aim to support people and communities with patterns that are accessible, meaningful, and made with love.

Joining the Crochet Cancer Challenge fits that mission perfectly. Every hat made through this event is a tangible reminder that someone cares, and that’s the heart of American Crochet.

How You Can Join the Challenge

Getting involved is simple, and every skill level is welcome:

  1. Visit the challenge page. You’ll find each featured hat pattern there as it is released through October.
  2. Download a free pattern and crochet at least one hat. Choose any pattern that speaks to you and stitch at your own pace.
  3. Donate your finished hat. Take it to a local hospital, cancer center, or organization, or give it to someone you know who is going through treatment.
  4. Share it. Invite your crochet friends and groups. The more people who join, the more hats are made.
1 crochet pattern plus 1 download equals your pledge - Crochet Cancer Challenge.

Because hats are worn close to the skin, reach for soft, washable yarn. It’s also a good idea to check your chosen hospital or organization’s guidelines before you start, since many have their own requirements for yarn, size, and washing.

Final Thoughts

Being part of the Crochet Cancer Challenge is a reminder of what our crochet community can do when we come together. I’m grateful to Christine of Sweet Potato 3 for hosting this event, and to every designer and maker who gives their time, creativity, and compassion.

If you’re looking for a meaningful project that blends creativity with kindness, I invite you to join us. Together, we can spread warmth, comfort, and handmade love, one hat at a time.

Join us and invite others to the Crochet Cancer Challenge.
