Welcome, friend โ I’m so glad you’re here! ๐ If you’re brand new to crochet, this is your starting place. We’ll go step by step, from holding your very first hook to working your first rows of stitches. No rush, no pressure โ just you, some yarn, and me right beside you.
Before You Begin
Choosing Your Yarn
For learning, reach for a smooth, light-colored worsted weight (#4) yarn โ light colors make it much easier to see your stitches. A basic acrylic is perfect and budget-friendly while you practice.
Choosing Your Hook
A size H (5.0 mm) or I (5.5 mm) hook pairs beautifully with worsted weight yarn and is comfortable for new hands. An ergonomic handle is a lovely treat if you have one!
How to Hold Your Hook
There’s no single “right” way โ most crocheters hold the hook like a pencil or like a knife. Try both and see what feels natural.

Your First Stitches
Work through these in order โ each one builds on the last.
1. Slip Knot & Chain Stitch
Every project begins here โ the slip knot secures your yarn to the hook, and the chain is the foundation you build on.

2. Slip Stitch
The shortest stitch of all โ used to join rounds, edge your work, and move across stitches without adding height.

3. Single Crochet
The most-used stitch in all of crochet โ short, sturdy, and the building block for countless projects.

4. Half Double Crochet
A little taller than a single crochet, with a soft, squishy texture that’s wonderful for blankets, hats, and baby makes.

5. Double Crochet
