There’s something about the first chilly mornings that makes me reach for a layer, and this November I’m so happy to be part of the Cozy Layers Blog Hop, hosted by Karmen of Loops Only. 🍂
From November 1st through 15th, a different designer is featured every day with a cozy crochet layer: ponchos, cardigans, sweaters, cozy dresses, capes, capelets, ruana wraps, cocoon cardigans, shrugs, wraps and cowls. Each featured pattern has a special offer for a 48-hour window around its day.
Why Crochet Layers Belong in Your Fall Wardrobe
Here in Texas, fall doesn’t arrive all at once. A morning can start out crisp enough for a wrap and end warm enough for short sleeves, and that’s exactly why I love crochet layers. A cowl, a poncho or a shawl adds just the right amount of warmth, and it slips right off when the afternoon warms up.
Handmade layers are also some of the most rewarding things to make. They work up faster than a sweater, there’s no fitting to fuss over, and one pattern can look completely different depending on your yarn and color. Make one in a soft neutral that goes with everything, or choose a jewel tone that makes a simple outfit feel special.
Ways to Wear Your Crochet Layers
- Over a long sleeve or turtleneck: an open-lace poncho adds texture and warmth without the bulk.
- Close around your neck: a textured cowl keeps the chill off on windy mornings and dresses up a plain sweater or coat.
- Draped and doubled: a longer cowl or scarf can loop twice for extra warmth, then hang long and loose when the day warms up.
- Over your shoulders: a shawl or wrap is just right for church, a chilly restaurant or an evening on the porch.
Choosing Yarn for Cozy Layers
For layers, drape matters as much as warmth. Lighter yarns like DK and sport weight let lace ponchos and scarves flow beautifully, while a soft worsted weight gives a cowl that cozy, squishy texture. And if you’re making something for the holidays, a yarn with a little sparkle goes a long way.
Layers Make Wonderful Gifts
Layers also make some of my favorite handmade gifts. A cowl or scarf is easy to give because the fit is so forgiving. For a poncho, shrug or cardigan, size does matter, so check the pattern’s size chart and choose the size closest to the person you’re making it for. Either way, it’s the kind of piece they’ll reach for again and again all season long. 💛
My Two Days in the Hop
I have two patterns that are part of the Cozy Layers Blog Hop, and I can’t wait to share them with you! Be sure to check back on Saturday, November 7 and Thursday, November 12 to see which ones they are. 💛
